How to read your Profit & Loss in five minutes

You do not need an accounting degree to understand your P&L. Here is what to look at first.

A Profit & Loss statement answers one question: did the business make money over a period? Reading it well takes minutes, not hours.

Look at these lines first

  • Revenue: is it growing compared to last period?
  • Gross profit: how much is left after direct costs?
  • Operating expenses: which categories grew fastest?
  • Net profit: the bottom line after everything.

Compare, do not just read

A single P&L tells you little. Comparing this month with last month, or this year with last year, shows the trend.
