CRM vs ERP: what does your business actually need?

CRM manages relationships, ERP manages operations. Most growing businesses eventually need both, and they work best when connected.

CRM and ERP are two of the most common business software categories, and two of the most confused. The short version: CRM looks outward at customers, ERP looks inward at operations.

What a CRM does

  • Tracks leads, deals and sales pipelines.
  • Keeps a history of calls, emails and meetings.
  • Reminds your team to follow up.

What an ERP does

  • Manages inventory, purchasing and orders.
  • Connects finance and accounting to operations.
  • Handles HR, suppliers and internal processes.

Why connecting them matters

When CRM and ERP are separate, a closed deal has to be re-typed as an order, and sales cannot see stock. When they share one data foundation, a won deal becomes an order automatically and everyone works from the same numbers.

Choose based on where your business feels the most pain today, but plan for both to work together tomorrow.
